Homemade Pizza with Red Sauce

Growing up, we always had Pizza on Friday nights, and 9/10 times, it was completely homemade. There’s just something about made from scratch Pizza Dough that makes for such a yummy dinner.

For the Sauce

  • 8 oz tomato sauce

    ½ tsp oregano

    ¼ tsp basil

    ½ tsp sugar

    1 Tbsp water

For the Pizza Dough

  • 2-2 1/3 cups All-purpose flour, divided

    1 packet instant yeast (2 ¼ tsp)

    1 ½ tsp sugar

    ¾ tsp salt (omit when using butter as a topping)

    ¼ tsp garlic powder

    2 Tbsp olive oil

    ¾ cup warm water

For the Toppings

  • Mozzarella

    Mushrooms

    Bell Peppers

    Olives

    Tomato

    Red Onion

    Meat

    Spurzile’s Butter

Preparing the Sauce

  1. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Simmer uncovered for 5 minutes until thick.
  2. Set aside.

Prepare the Dough

  1. Combine 1 cup of flour, yeast, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Add garlic powder. Mix until combined.
  2. Add olive oil and warm water and use a wooden spoon to stir very well.
  3. Gradually add another cup of flour. Add as much as needed to form a cohesive elastic ball. The dough will still be slightly sticky, but can be moved around in your hands without completely sticking to you. Knead the dough for 3-5 minutes.
  4. Drizzle a large, clean bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in the bowl. Coat with oil. Cover with plastic wrap and place in a warm place.
  5. Allow dough to rise for 30 minutes or until double in size.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch dough once to deflate.

Make the Pizza

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 425*F.
  2. Work the dough with your hands into a 12” pizza pan, so it’s evenly displaced. Poke holes with a fork throughout the dough.
  3. Get your toppings ready to use.
  4. Melt Spurzile’s butter, any flavor you desire, and spread evenly over the pizza dough.
  5. Take your sauce and spread it over the dough until covered, as much or as little as desired.
  6. Take a little bit of cheese and toss it over your sauce.
  7. Add any toppings you want evenly over the dough, then cover with the remaining cheese.
  8. Bake the pizza for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese has a kiss of golden to it.
  9. Let sit for 5-10 minutes. Slice into pieces and serve. Enjoy.

You can use any topping you desire. Can can even make a garlic sauce and chicken version. Or place any type of meat: Italian sausage, pepperoni, chicken, Canadian bacon, etc. Get creative, this recipe is versatile.
